Meet Lucy, Our 1988 Airstream Excella Camper: The Ultimate Glamping Experience

At our Bigfork, Montana hotel, you’re not just staying for a night, you’re becoming part of out community. You don’t just get a bed upon which to lay your head, you get a place to call home...if only for a moment. At our home, our guests are our family. A family that gathers around campfires while telling tales of adventures, connecting with others, and making lifelong friendships.

While your first stay here may be your only stay here, you’ll leave this family knowing that you are welcome back anytime you need a space under that big blue Montana sky.

Like any family, you may not want to spend every waking moment with us. So when Big Sky Country is beckoning, we’ve got your back with all things Montana in the Flathead Valley

“We believe family is what you make it, and when you stay here with us, you’re family.”

(Your FLR Family)

Our campers are also a part of our family, and just like every family member, each of them has unique attributes that define exactly who they are. Lucy is no different. Her spunky, yet welcoming persona will make you feel right at home.

Who is Lucy?

Lucy’s destiny from the beginning was to become the Queen of Flathead Lake Resort. But she never knew that until the moment she was.

Being Queen usually comes with a connotation of being haughty and pompous. Not this Queen. This Queen is more like Mom. A mom with spunk, yet one who welcomes you, no matter when you arrive home, with smells of fresh baked cookies and breads, ready to wrap you in her arms full of soft blankets and warm smiles, all while encouraging you to be your best self.

Welcome to Lucy Bug! A 1988 vintage Airstream with touches of magic meant to make you feel instantly at home. From handcrafted trunks tucked neatly away under refurbished couches down to the smallest touches of her knobs and handles inspired by a mom, no less, donning eclectic colors and styles, nothing is overlooked when it comes to this vintage Airstream living at our hotel in Bigfork.

Cozy touches of nostalgia and inspiration are everywhere in Lucy.

Once Brittain and Josh’s full-time home on the road, Lucy is now a Montana glamping Airstream that continues to welcome in guests as though they have lived here forever and are simply coming home. Flathead Lake Resort welcomes you in like family, and there is nothing truer than when you stay with Lucy.

Where did Lucy, the 1988 Airstream, come from?

To understand Lucy or Lucy Bug, you’ll first have to get to know your hosts, Brittain (Britt) and Josh

From the beginning, just like Lucy, Britt’s destiny, unbeknownst to her, (it was kismet) was to live and travel in an RV. From a young age, she had been traveling in an RV with her dad visiting clients for his mobile vet service. Being in an RV was just a part of life. Little did she know, the RV world would become a part of her.

Josh, on the other hand, never had an inkling towards RV life, although travel has always been a bug. So when the two came together, they may not have known what the world had in store for them, but the universe certainly did.

While neither of them can fully explain how their full time RV life came together, they both agreed the seed was planted when they attended an RV show in Kansas City as a young couple, not yet betrothed to one another. And it wasn’t any RV that inspired them; it was a new retro style Winnebago Brave that began to pull them in.

Months later, after they were engaged, they began to realize that freedom came with the RV lifestyle, and for them that freedom was going to be in a vintage rig. This sent them on a nationwide virtual shopping spree for the vintage rig that they would call home. The first one they came across was a 1988 Airstream, mauve pink and move-in ready. Straight out of the 80’s move-in ready, that is.

Home was right in their backyard!

“I knew from the moment I stepped in that we were home. And she was right in our backyard all along.” Brittain

Six weeks later, after still looking, there was a pull that they could not ignore. The 1988 Airstream that they first came across was calling them home. The black panels that covered her front windows were like ladybug eyes. And when a ladybug lands on you it’s a sign of luck, of great things to come. Britt could not resist. The irony was, after a nationwide search, the soon to be Lucy, also later to be fondly called Lucy Bug, was in Kansas City, right in their backyard.

How did Lucy become Lucy?

Movie parties were a thing in Brittain’s family, so it was no surprise that when Josh and Brittain were seeking out vintage campers, Brittain’s dad found the movie that cast their new trailer in the role that would become her namesake.

Grab your popcorn and your favorite beverage, because the 1950s film, The Long Long Trailer starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz will draw you in with Lucy and Desi’s comedic style, quick wit, and heartwarming camaraderie. Traveling in an RV in the 50s really isn’t much different than traveling in one today. And while Lucy is no longer on the road, her whispered tales of adventures are evidenced the second you walk in her door.

There’s a feeling of nostalgia, a sense that laughter is the best medicine, and warmth that only Lucy can give you with her vibrant and spirited self. A perfect place to call home for any adventures found at Flathead Lake Resort and in the Flathead Valley while glamping in Montana, pure Lucy style.

And even before Lucy made her move to her new home at our hotel in Bigfork, she was a spunky lady, all decked out to greet Josh and Brittain’s guests at their wedding. A centerpiece at Flathead Lake Resort, she played her role as a centerpiece at their wedding just as brilliantly.

With the classic TV show, I Love Lucy playing on the inside, Lucy was also the host for Josh and Britt’s first ever housewarming party. She played a predominant role in starting their lives together, and it truly was their first home. Lucy to this day has a really special place in their hearts.

And now after being their home on the road for five years, she is ready to be your home at our Bigfork, Montana hotel. A Queen in her own right. Lucy is ready to welcome you home, just as she did for Josh and Brittain for so many years.

“I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.” Lucille Ball

Lucy offers Montana glamping beauty in a welcoming tiny home.

Whether you call her Lucy or Lucy Bug, when you walk in, you’ll immediately feel her welcoming touches. From her original fixtures and furnishings comes a desire to please the most refined palate. In the cozy living area, you can sink down onto the reupholstered large couch and gaze out the wide front window to the world beyond. Or gaze into the mirror lovingly purchased from a mother-daughter trip to Lebanon.

Or maybe the kitchen calls you in with its colorful accents, tin coffee mugs, and a working vintage style juicer (a wedding gift from Grandma). And whether you spend a night preparing a home-cooked meal or ordering takeout, the window above the sink and alongside the dining room table brings the Montana skies in, making you feel secure inside a home that was meant to be exactly that. A home.

And wandering down the hall, the map covered closet doors will remind you that the world is your oyster, yet for now Montana has you safely in her grasp.

With original fixtures well-cared for in the bathroom, a hot shower will be the perfect ending to your day. It doesn’t matter if that day was spent out on Flathead Lake, exploring Glacier National Park, or simply hanging out by the campfire s’mores in hand surrounded by your new-found friends. Your shower is waiting for you.

Lucy’s handcrafted queen bed (that cleverly took the place of the long gone original two twin beds) will beckon you in where you’ll be tucked securely under the thick cozy covers. And as you drift off to sleep, Lucy’s arms wrapped around you like wings keeping you safe through the night, a simple framed image inspires. “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say because of you I didn’t give up.”

Spending time at Flathead Lake Resort is Montana glamping at its finest, but when spending time in this Montana tiny home, it’s so much more than just glamping. It’s like coming home.

Lucy, the Queen of Glamping at Flathead Lake, Montana

Lucy is a complex character. Like her namesake Lucille Ball, she is a fiery and vibrant Queen. And like a ladybug, landing a few nights with Lucy Bug will make you feel lucky, energetic, and passionate, while giving you a tranquil environment that rejuvenates your entire being. Let Lucy be your foundation, your home away from home while glamping Montana style.
